UK Trip 10 Nov to 23 Nov 2024 - Family sent off
On November 10, 2024, I embarked on my second visit to the UK, this time accompanied by my wife and her niece, Dania. We set off from Changi Airport on a comfortable Singapore Airlines flight at 11 PM, landing in London Heathrow at 6 AM the next morning. As we stepped out into the crisp morning air, the chilly 3 degrees Celsius greeted us, a sharp contrast to the warmth we left behind.

Collecting our rental car from Avis, we set our sights on Tetbury, the heart of our adventure. This visit held special significance: it was Dania's first trip to Tetbury, where she would stay with our relatives, Kak Leha and her husband, Tony King. Our plan was to spend two weeks exploring the UK, dividing our time between Tetbury and several cities we hadn't visited during our first trip in April 2024. We also planned for a four-day stay in London before heading back home. Kak Leha was delighted to have Dania stay with them for an extended period as she prepared for her Master’s program in the UK next year. For Dania, this journey was a chance to experience the UK's four seasons—a dream she was excited to fulfill before embarking on her academic adventure.
Exploring the Enchanting Cotswolds
On the third day of our stay in Tetbury, we began our adventures with a delightful 40-minute walk with Tony and Kak Leha, taking in the fresh, cool air and the serene charm of the area. Our exploration of the Cotswolds commenced with Welford-on-Avon, where we marveled at the picturesque thatched-roof cottages. It felt as though we had stepped into a page from a classic English novel.
Next, we visited Chipping Campden, with its historic limestone buildings and vibrant market square, a perfect spot to soak up the local atmosphere.

Chipping Campden is a charming market town in the Cotswolds region of England. It was established in the 12th century and became wealthy from the wool trade, which is why we can see many beautiful stone buildings, like the Market Hall built in 1627. People visit Chipping Campden for its lovely streets, unique shops, and local restaurants. The surrounding countryside has great walking trails, including parts of the Cotswold Way, making it a favourite spot for nature lovers. Overall, Chipping Campden is appreciated for its history, art, and beautiful scenery.

Broadway Tower was one of the highlights of our itinerary, offering stunning views of the rolling hills and countryside.

Broadway Tower is a striking landmark in the Cotswolds, built in the late 18th century as a 65-foot-tall decorative structure designed to enhance the landscape. Known for its stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, it remains a popular destination for visitors. As we were rushing to explore other areas of the Cotswolds that day, we didn’t enter the tower but opted to enjoy the surrounding trails instead. I’m certain we’ll return to this area to experience the breathtaking views from the top of the tower as described.
Originally commissioned by the Earl of Coventry, Broadway Tower is notable for its unique architecture, which combines Gothic and medieval styles. It also has historical significance, having served various purposes over the years, including a lookout point and a residence for artists.
Surrounded by beautiful parkland, Broadway Tower is part of the Broadway Tower Country Park, where visitors can enjoy walking trails and picnic areas. It's a must-see attraction for anyone exploring the Cotswolds, offering both history and breathtaking views.
Celebrating Milestones in Birmingham and Chester

November 14 marked a special day: my wedding anniversary. We set off early for Brindley Place in Birmingham, navigating through a foggy countryside. Once there, we admired the stunning architecture around the canals before heading to Chester.

Brindleyplace is a lively development in Birmingham, known for its mix of shops, restaurants, and leisure spaces. Named after the engineer James Brindley, it features modern architecture and picturesque canalside walkways. The area includes cultural attractions like the Ikon Gallery and the Birmingham Sealife Centre, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Overall, Brindleyplace offers a vibrant atmosphere for dining, shopping, and relaxation.
In Chester, we enjoyed a tranquil river cruise on the River Dee and explored the famous Nine Houses, a row of historic timber-framed cottages that transport you back in time. We also wandered through Chester’s Roman Garden, a perfect blend of adventure and history that made our anniversary memorable. The day wrapped up with a delicious dinner at Chester Charcoal Grill.

With its rich history and vibrant cultural scene, Chester is a popular destination for visitors.

The nine houses
Nine Houses, located on Eastgate Street in Chester, England, are 17th-century timber-framed homes known for their distinctive architecture. Originally built as merchant residences, they have been well-preserved and now house shops and businesses. The Nine Houses are a key attraction, showcasing Chester's rich history and medieval heritage.

The Roman Gardens in Chester are a tranquil green space showcasing the city's rich Roman heritage. The area includes remnants of Roman walls and mosaics, providing visitors with a glimpse into the city's past. The gardens are a popular spot for both locals and tourists to relax and enjoy the historical surroundings, making them a significant part of Chester's cultural landscape.
A Day of Discovery: Liverpool and Manchester
The next day, we drove from Chester to Liverpool, savoring a warm coffee and light breakfast at Albert Dock. The lively atmosphere was invigorating. By midday, we made our way to Manchester, where we visited Chetham’s Library and the National Football Museum, immersing ourselves in the city’s rich legacy.
The highlight of our day was a visit to Old Trafford Stadium, home to Manchester United. As a football fan, Dania was thrilled, and the grandeur of the venue left a lasting impression. We ended the day checking into our Airbnb and exploring the Trafford Centre, filled with shops and restaurants.
The Magic of Snow
On November 19, I experienced a moment I had long imagined—seeing snow fall for the first time. Stepping outside to find a light dusting of snow was magical. We ventured to nearby towns, enjoying the winter landscape that transformed our surroundings into a picturesque scene.
Concluding Our Journey in London
By November 21, it was time to head to London. We left Dania behind to enjoy more time with the King family, while my wife and I embarked on a two-hour journey to the city. It was very cold when we left Tetbury, with frosty ice covering my car as we set off at around 9 in the morning. Fortunately, the weather improved as we drove along the main motorway (M4). The two-hour journey to London from Tetbury was smooth, and we arrived at the hotel, Crowne Plaza London, situated on the outskirts of the city, where we’ll spend three nights before flying back to Singapore on Sunday morning. To our relief, the room was ready for check-in, allowing us to unload our luggage immediately. We started our London trip by visiting the British Museum soon after returning the rental car. We didn’t have enough time to explore the exhibits so we focused on taking pictures of the museum architecture. On the second day, we strolled through Spitalfields Market, a vibrant area.
Navigating the city was a breeze with the Underground train system. We bought a day ticket for around £16, which allowed unlimited travel on trains and buses, an efficient way to get around London. In the afternoon, we did some shopping at Primark, picking up a few items for our grandchildren. Our final day was a mix of relaxation and soaking in the last moments of London before we fly out from Heathrow Airport on Sunday morning.
Reflecting on our delightful 10-day stay in Tetbury, once again we feel deeply grateful for the warm hospitality of our hosts, Kak Leha and her husband, Tony King, who welcomed us into their lovely home. This visit marked our second time exploring the Cotswolds within a year, and we were once again captivated by its picturesque beauty. During this trip, we also ventured to Chester, Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester, creating even more cherished memories before returning to Tetbury for a few restful days.
This second visit to the UK has been truly special. Experiencing the extreme cold at the end of autumn, with temperatures dropping below zero, was unforgettable. It even gave me my first glimpse of snowflakes, a magical sight. Driving in snowy conditions was a new challenge, but with extra caution, I managed the slippery roads safely.
I cherished every moment spent exploring the countryside and enjoying the chill in the air. As we navigated through picturesque towns, rich history, and cherished moments, I realized that travel is not just about the destination, but the memories we create along the way. This experience reminded me of the importance of staying active and healthy, nurturing both body and mind to ensure a fulfilling life.
This journey has been a perfect blend of adventure, family warmth, and treasured experiences, leaving us with memories to cherish for a lifetime. Here’s to more adventures, cherished memories.
